Internal Medicine in the DC Metro Area

Vaccines aren't just for children. Adults need protection too.

Most adults are significantly under-immunized — leaving them unnecessarily vulnerable to preventable diseases including shingles, pneumococcal pneumonia, pertussis (whooping cough), and hepatitis B. Adult immunization requires a physician who reviews your complete vaccination history, assesses for contraindications, identifies vaccines requiring adult boosters, and ensures your immunization record is complete according to the current CDC adult immunization schedule.

Answer

Vaccines at Millennium means Dr. Shayma reviews what you’ve had and what you need, screens for contraindications, and administers indicated vaccines with proper documentation. You leave with an updated vaccine record — not just a single shot administered without context.

Vaccines and immunocompromised patients

Patients on immunosuppressive medications (methotrexate, biologics, steroids, chemotherapy) or with conditions affecting immune function (HIV, asplenia, CKD, diabetes) have specific vaccine considerations — including the need for additional vaccines and the avoidance of live vaccines. Dr. Shayma manages immunization for this population with the nuance it requires.

Vaccines We Administer

Millennium Medical Center follows current CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations for adult immunization, updated annually. Dr. Shayma stays current on schedule changes and new vaccine approvals.

01

Influenza, Shingrix & Pneumococcal

Annual influenza vaccination for all adults — patients 65+ receive high-dose or adjuvanted flu vaccine. Shingrix: two-dose recombinant zoster vaccine series providing 90%+ protection against shingles — recommended for all immunocompetent adults 50+, regardless of prior chickenpox or Zostavax history. PCV20 or PCV15/PPSV23 series recommended for adults 65+ and younger adults with diabetes, chronic lung disease, smoking, or immunocompromise.

02

Tdap/Td Booster & Hepatitis B Series

Tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap) as a one-time replacement for a Td booster, then Td every 10 years — particularly important for adults around infants or pregnant women. Three-dose hepatitis B series recommended for all adults not previously vaccinated, regardless of age, and for patients with diabetes, chronic liver disease, or those on dialysis.

FAQs

Vaccinations FAQ — Your questions, answered.

The most common questions patients ask about adult immunization at Millennium Medical Center.

Which vaccines do adults need?

The CDC recommends annual influenza vaccine for all adults, COVID-19 updated booster, Tdap every 10 years, Shingrix (shingles) for adults 50+, pneumococcal vaccines at 65+ or earlier for high-risk patients, hepatitis B series if not previously vaccinated, and others based on age, health conditions, occupation, and travel plans.

Do I need a prescription for vaccines?

Most adult vaccines can be administered under a standing order protocol, but seeing a physician for your vaccination visit means Dr. Shayma can review your full vaccine history, identify gaps, assess for contraindications, and ensure you receive the vaccines you actually need — not just the ones available at a pharmacy counter.

Can I get multiple vaccines at the same visit?

Generally yes. Multiple vaccines can be administered at the same visit, typically at different injection sites. Dr. Shayma will advise on which combinations are recommended and which should be spaced apart in specific clinical situations.

I had chickenpox as a child. Do I still need Shingrix?

Yes. Having had chickenpox means the varicella-zoster virus is dormant in your nerve cells and can reactivate as shingles later in life — especially as immune function declines with age. Shingrix is recommended regardless of prior chickenpox history and is also recommended if you received the older Zostavax vaccine.

How far in advance do I need travel vaccines?

It depends on the destination and vaccine. Some vaccines like hepatitis A provide protection within 2 weeks; others require multiple doses over weeks. For complex travel itineraries, schedule your travel health visit at least 4–6 weeks before departure to allow adequate time for series completion.
